While Hill's leaving, why not Locklin to head NMSU?

16 hours 35 min ago
New Mexico State fired coach Hal Mumme after he won just 11 games in four seasons. What I didn't realize was that, shoot, five of those wins came against Div. I-AA teams ... that's kind of shameful. It's time for... Daniel Lyght

The Fantasy Buzz: Pulling out all the stops

Thu, 2008-11-27 22:38
Hey, we all remember watching "The Waterboy" when Dan Fouts kept on saying Adam Sandler's team was laying it all on the line, not holding anything back and pulling out all the stops. Then I think it was Al Michaels who just kept on getting annoyed. Well, I need a win to get in the playoffs, and drastic times call for drastic measures. (Hey, this is a cliche-driven Fantasy Buzz today.) So what, you might ask, did I do? For the first time in Delton Lowery's history in fantasy football, I do NOT have a player from the Seattle Seahawks on my team. Find out who I've added to my roster that might help you out by reading on. (IT'S LIKE I'M IN NEED OF TACKLIN' FUEL, AND CAPTAIN INSANO SHOWS NO MERCY!!!) Delton Lowery

Central Section playoffs, pre-Thanksgiving style

Thu, 2008-11-27 04:09
Hey, the Central Section is just like college football now -- they're playing on Wednesday night! Kingsburg has bolted to a 13-0 26-0 halftime lead over Taft. QB Tyler Bray is the hero with a 6-yard TD pass to Caleb Fink, a 10-yard TD run, a 24-yard TD pass to Jason Linman and an 11-yard TD pass to Linman with 6.3 seconds left in the half. They're playing in a steady rain, but the refurbished Kingsburg stadium looks great. Kingsburg and Taft took advantage of first-round byes in Division IV to schedule the Wednesday game. The winner gets a little more rest before the semifinal next Friday night; the loser gets to salve the pain with a turkey leg. Keep up with all the Central Section playoff action this week at The Bee's high school football page. Spotted in the crowd: Ryan Phelan, coach of the top-seeded Central Valley Christian Cavaliers. His team hosts Arvin on Friday; get past the Bears, and CVC gets a semifinal date with the Taft-Kingsburg winner. ... Which will be Kingsburg after the Vikings finished off a 39-0 rout. Bray added another TD on a 40-yard pass to Johnathan Alcala, and London Lacy came on to throw a final TD pass. Oh, and the Vikings held on to the shutout when Taft fumbled at the Kingsburg 1. Ouch. The Fantasy Buzz: Tell us your playoff path

Wed, 2008-11-26 09:18
The playoffs are upon us, and we'd like to know if you're in or out, and how you wound up in that position? Did you draft well, make good trades/waiver moves, or were or weren't you able to recover after having a star player such as Tom Brady get hurt? Your answers could help all of us become better fantasy owners next season, so please enlighten us with your stories. Leave your input on this blog or e-mail sports@fresnobee.com and you might see them in Sunday's edition of The Bee. As for me, I'm either: A. A win from making it in the playoffs as either my division champion (we have two six-team divisions, with the champs in each getting a first-round bye) or one of the four wild cards. or B. A loss from being one of several 7-6 teams, and I don't think I'll have enough points to get one of the wild cards. Delton Lowery

Fresno marathon: The super extended version, Part I

Mon, 2008-11-24 20:15
The idea seemed like a good one when I pitched it to the editors. I'd run the inaugural Eye-Q Two Cities Marathon and write about it. In my head, it was going to be more than the usual participatory journalism. I was going to interview a different runner on every mile. The column would be one quote from each person and the reader would get an idea of what it's like to run a marathon through the eyes of 26 different participants. As you might expect, there were several problems with the plan, some obvious, some not so obvious, but what fun is life if you can't nearly get yourself nearly killed now and again?
